About the Book

In The Copper Penny, Penny struggles to be the odd coin out: he is the coin worth the least amount of money. When Loonie and Toonie move into the wallet, Penny finds himself wondering if he is worth anything at all... until one day when everything changes.

The Copper Penny is a story geared towards young children to teach them that no one should be bullied for how much money they have or judged because of it.

Marissa Simoes is a Secondary Five student at Howard S Billings High School in the International Baccalaureate Programme. She is an author and illustrator of several children's books which all address the issue of bullying. Targeted at young children, she hopes that the books will help children understand that their words, as well as their actions, can have both negative and positive consequences on others. Dealing with racism, sexism, and classism, these books strive to help young children understand these often complex problems that everyone is familiar with.
