This book traces the history of two "Free Persons of Color" families, the Waldens and Goins and their road to prosperity. Their journey began in Surry County, Virginia continued through the counties of Warren, Granville, Chatham, Moore and Cumberland in North Carolina, and became part of the tradegy that occured in Rosewood, Florida.

My great-grandfather was Eli Philip Walden who was born in 1844. His son, William Robert Walden was my grandfather. One of William's daughters, Helen, born in 1921 was my mother.
