Selly Goodwin began taking pictures late in life by enrolling in a course in black and white photography in Augusta, Georgia in 2000 trying to use her husband's very old SLR camera. She soon purchased a Canon Rebel and set off on a trip to Virginia with camera in hand and lots of film. She went digital in 2004 and continues to use a Canon EOS 10D and a small Canon Power Shot. She had no further training as a photographer and states that her expertise with techniques may be lacking but that she thinks she has a good eye. Most of her photos are taken through a "spiritual lens."
