In His longest recorded sermon, Jesus laid forth the commands for all those who are to follow after Him (Matthew 5-7). His admonition: "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect." Jesus reveals not just duties we must perform, but the glory of who we must become. They are commands given to transform the condition of our sinful hearts by showing us how contrary we are to His glory. Yet in His kindness and grace, He invites us in to partake of His glorious nature. Later Jesus reveals that all of the commands are summed up in two, to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). Love is what fulfills all of the commandments. And so it was, with many letters, that the apostles wrote to churches and individuals to further expound upon the command to love. Scattered throughout the rest of the New Testament, Jesus' teaching of how to love one another is opened up for everyday life.
