Abbreviated history of Department of Plant Pathology at University of California, Berkeley, 1903-1991. The history includes information on the world wide role of its faculty beginning with its founder Ralph Smith and his extraordinary role in the development of plant pathology throughout the state. Included are excerpts and images of many faculty, It focuses on the factors that made it one of the most foremost departments in the world and covers the department's research, and teaching philosophy and ever changing role as it reacted to the politics of the time and agricultural demands beginning with direct interaction with state politicians to its termination because of disinterest in agriculture from powerful campus administrators.
Both A. R. Weinhold and M. N. Schroth were Faculty of Department of Plant Pathology, both chairs, and also held various administrative posts on the Berkeley campus and statewide Divisions of Agriculture and Natural Resources. .
