At 19, I left home and the only life I knew for Galveston Island, TX, more than a thousand miles away. My paycheck allowed me to afford a place in the slums on 34th & N - the only white guy on the block. It was a rough time, but the bittersweet memories I gained will always be with me.

During the next few years, I met the woman who would become my wife, who has stood by me through mountain & desert ops, Afghanistan, and now is the mother of my child.
