When did the Democratic Party leave us behind and fall off the cliff of leftist obscurity? So far gone that there is no hope for the party to return to the way it was before, so what is it now?

Since the the party cannot really be called Democrats any longer, what are they now? Socialist? Leftists? Some other name we do not have a name for yet?
