Odichrist Bethel’s “Country Boy” reveals a variety of themes taken from the society of the modern world. His poems are straight, narrative, simple, romantic and lyrical. They have thrilling vividness of narration and much of the verse has a melodious vigour.
The interest of the poems lies not only in moving narrative, but in its charm of workmanship and imaginative traits also. Admirable truth and charm of imagination, exquisite freshness and felicity of touch mark certain poems. The soul of poetry breathes in each and every poem. A tendency to linger over every imagined pleasure with an over-fond and doting relish is unmistakable in the poems. The poet’s creative impulse is disciplined and systematic. The poet endeavours also to extend the resources of the language, and to make them adequate to the range and freshness of his imagery, by the use of phrases such as ‘crystal clear dream’ and ‘immortal nights’.
