Many years ago, Lois Rund was gifted a 4" x 6" cloth-covered notebook that was tattered and stained, with brittle pages held together precariously by a spine of tight stitches. It was given to Lois by her husband's grandmother, Emma Lane Drake, who was the granddaughter of Elizabeth Neely Walker, the notebook's original owner. This treasure was Elizabeth's personal diary in which she wrote about daily life during the early months of 1857.
Lois transcribed the lightly penciled entries from the notebook's pages onto a legal pad and then typed them into a word processor. Unfortunately, those typed words were lost in a digital black hole.
Recently, Kathy Becker, Lois' daughter, retrieved the diary and legal pad and retyped those words, carefully verifying each word as she went. The words in this book are the words of Elizabeth Neely Walker as best they could be determined from the original document. Please note: some words could not be deciphered due to the condition of the notebook.
