Lauren Small was born in Uganda. Her dad was South African and her mum was English. She has 2 younger sisters that feature in this book. As. Child Lauren was very involved in nature, as you would be living on the banks of the Nile river. Her dad had many businesses and was very busy and stressed out. You see how he changes through the book as he is not as stressed out.
