A sick teen mother rushed to the hospital on a cold December night gives birth to a premature daughter. Miraculously both survive but the girl’s journey is a testament to the fighting spirit and Jesus. It also shows how broken many of the United States public assistance programs are and how some fall through the cracks and how this girl could have one them.

I was this girl. I had to change names and locations in this story for privacy purposes but the events are true. I have deep concerns about the various child protection services and mental health care services along a number of other services the government provides for the vulnerable. Many end up abused or neglected. Then there’s my mom who was looked down upon as drug addicted prostitute instead of providing her treatment for schizophrenia and paranoia. Maybe if she got help she would have lived past 37. You’ll see how one girl managed to make this flawed system somehow work for her by the grace of God.
