This story is about the family of Alexander McCormick who left Benbecula, Scotland in 1849 and settled at the Scottish settlement at Bornish in Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. It is intended to provide family members an insight into our family’s past; and the struggles and hardships our fore-fathers endured in the homeland, and as immigrants to the new world. I have tried to provide a general understanding of the way of life on Benbecula in eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the political and economic forces affecting the lives of the people, and the circumstances that caused most of them to leave. Finally, I have tried to shed some light on the personalities of the heads of each generation through biographical sketches that include source documents and personal recollection.
