About the Book
Harnett County Training School, 610 E. Johnson St., Dunn, NC is situated on 5.33 acres. It was selected as an African American Historical site by the National Registry of Historic Places in 2014. Special thanks to Edward F. Turberg, Restoration Specialist (1939-2018) for nominating this facility.
The building was funded by Chicago Philanthropist Julius Rosenwald (Sears & Roebuck) in 1917 and opened its doors in 1922. The segregated school served African American students from first through 11th grades until it closed in 1968. It was not until the late 1960s when the State of North Carolina became desegregated.
In 1948 it was renamed Harnett High School. Thousands walked through the doors and earned an education from a majority African American faculty and staff.

to enhance educational opportunities for blacks during the segregation period ending in the late 1960s."

Great-Granddaughter to Owen & Arlenius Carroll. Great-Great-Granddaughter to Sam & Julia Carroll.
