Eight girls in a Girl Scout troop from Andover, Massachusetts were talking about stereotypes one day. They noticed that some girls get left out if they are not wearing the "in" clothes on the playground. They decided to create a story about a unique girl who loved to knit and eventually learned to care less about what anyone thinks of her creations.
