August 22, 2009 transformed the lives of Vincent and the members of the Kruger family. A first host family, nervous and apprehensive, opened their home and hearts to a young man from Belgium, who exuded self-confidence and has more awareness of others than they do themselves. As the year progressed, Vincent became part of another family and countless friends, and the bonds formed with all will no doubt remain for many years to come.

Once an exchange student myself, I have now come full circle and am about to bid farwell as a host mother to my "son". At long last, I understand that when I left over 20 years ago, it wasn't only my heart that was filled with sadness, but those of my host mothers as well. Since that time, I still adhere to "we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason", shut up and listen and to live with no regrets.
