About the Book

A short history of the USS Long. My grandpa, Ralph Kirk served aboard this ship during WWII. The USS Long was a WWI flush deck destroyer which was converted to a high speed minesweeper. She was sunk by a Kamikaze plane during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf on January 6, 1945. The survivors were picked up by the USS Hovey which was struck by a torpedo the very next day. Ralph Kirk did not survive this second sinking.
