In the story, Lilac Lou and the Blue Jean Rat, Eugene discovers that he has been sprayed with mud on a rainy day and his favorite jeans are ruined. His anger sets the tone for the rest of the story. After colliding on a city bus with the stylish and outspoken Lilac Lou, Eugene’s transformation into an avatar rat turns an ordinary bad morning into an extraordinary situation with twists and turns. Eugene is convinced it was Lilac who turned him into a rat and confronts her though-out the story to get her to change him back but it’s not until he reflects on his own actions and his mother’s wisdom does he he discover the key to his transformation.
