The immediate involvement of Nicholas II, after the July 19 (August 2) declaration of war in visiting his troops on the various Austro-German Fronts: From GHQ at Baranovici and from the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, the Emperor travels by Imperial train to the many infirmaries and hospitals, meeting with the injured and ill soldiers, speaking individually with them in a tender and comforting way. Not only are these Russian soldiers so willing to recover and go back to their units in order to defeat the enemy for the glory of the Fatherland and their Father, the the holy Tsar', but also the almost mystical closeness and awe they experience by seeing the Emperor of all the Russias face to face. Initial Russian victories are pealed back, the enemies advance and Nicholas II calls immediate emergency sessions to combine the military and the people to form one unified fighting block against the invaders.
