This play is loosely based on the conversion and immigration to America of the author-composer's great grandfather, Jacob Rolfsen, and his family. The "miracle" actually happened as it is portrayed on stage and the family did "gather to Zion" and help to build a "city of Zion," as is their dream in the play. And little Nicolene, who believed so strongly in miracles, walked all the way across the plains when she was nine years old and lived to become the author's grandmother, whom she knew intimately as a child.
