Drawing and painting have always been a part of Dennis Chilton’s life. Born in London, England on Sept 7th, 1932, he attended St Martin’s School of Art, where he studied life drawing. A course at the Regent Street Polytechnic taught him illustration, which influenced his preference for pictures that tell a story, especially set in a distinctive landscape. In 1959, Dennis moved to Canada with wife Daphne, where he continued his art as best he could while working as an engineer and helping to raise a family. Dennis’s favoured medium is watercolour, but occasionally he includes pen and ink for more detailed subjects. Dennis has sold his work locallyand in the US and UK. He often had commissions to paint people’s houses as a keepsake, and was also featured in the Bruce Trail Association calendar for many years.
The Puppeteer paintings in this book were painted to mark the arrival of each of his sixgrandchildren, born to his three children between 1995 and 2000.
When they lived in Winnipeg from 1960 to 1972, Dennis and Daphne became friends with Keith Tipples and his family. The Puppeteer paintings inspired Keith to write a story based on the characters and compositions.
