The Sanger Street Stories
A nostalgic, humorous stroll through small-town Australia—one shop, one shenanigan at a time.
Welcome to Corowa, New South Wales—where childhood was cheeky, the Rex Theatre was our palace, and every shop along Sanger Street came with its own cast of characters, scandals, and lollies worth nicking.
In this humorous collection of memoirs, Len Hetherington takes us back to the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, when paper rounds were paid in pies, kids knew the art of sneaking into the movies, and grocery shopping came with a side of life advice. From fashion misadventures at Ken King’s Menswear to near-death experiences involving electric fences, every tale is steeped in affection, mischief, and the kind of local legends that never made the newspaper—but live forever in a good yarn.
With a cast including larrikin brothers, mysterious racehorses, backyard barbers, and eccentric shopkeepers, The Sanger Street Stories captures a time when Australia was simpler, sillier, and superbly entertaining.
