To live in what's left of Europe, all citizens over the age of 15 must work for the country doing their part. Haire, the daughter of the manager of the agriculture department, has never seen anyone work around Meroz, her city. Her father has never offered to take her with him and when she asks, he is silent. She knows her father is lying about something when a strange neighbor speaks to her. She isn't afraid to follow her father to work and she can't help her temptation.
