I came to photography the same way I have come to most things that matter to me — without a formal introduction, without a curriculum, without anyone telling me what I was supposed to do next. I am self-taught in the truest sense of the word: the camera was my classroom, the street was my instructor, and every frame I made that did not work was a lesson I had to figure out on my own.
By profession I spent more than a decade working in healthcare — a world built around precision, around attention to detail, around the understanding that what you observe and how carefully you observe it genuinely matters. I did not know, when I started that career, that it was teaching me to be a photographer. But the habits of mind that healthcare demands — the discipline of careful looking, the patience to stay present in difficult or slow-moving situations, the respect for the specific and the particular over the general and the approximate — are the same habits that serious photography..
