Dorothy Julia Gaines arrived on June 28, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the oldest of fifteen children. Dorothea (the name she adopted as an adult) grew up in dire circumstances where the only focus was survival! Her parents neither encouraged or supported activities of folly, such as art. In spite of that, Dorothea would curl up in a corner of the three-room flat she shared with her family to pour over the works of Matisse, DaVinci, Renoir, Gaugin, Picasso, and Van Gogh that she found in library books. This was how she taught herself to draw and paint. Beginning in 1998, Dorothea's health began to deteriorate. Her last painting was completed when she was eighty-nine years old in a wheelchair having lost both legs to Diabetes with a magnifying glass in one hand and a brush in the other. Dorothea faced her failing health without complaint or resentment. On the morning of January 9, 2014, Dorothea passed away in her sleep at the age of ninety-one. This book is her legacy.
