For Jordan Harold Borkson, turning sixteen on the Fourth of July was supposed to be about fireworks, celebration, and a perfectly normal breakfast of Kix cereal. Instead, a sudden international broadcast delivers a catastrophic headline: The Fourth of July has been officially canceled. Behind this global tragedy is the nefarious, tea-sipping British aristocrat Boston McJebbers. Determined to erase the loud, joyous racket of American celebration once and for all, McJebbers has locked down the hemisphere in a grid of absolute, dreary quietude.

But McJebbers didn't account for the Borkson resolve—or Jordan’s fiercely loyal, reality-defying Crew of Whimsy.

Armed with a custom-woven lucky red shirt, an ordinary riverboat transformed into the transatlantic vessel The Liberty Belle, and a mountain of baking flour, Jordan sets sail across 3,000 miles of deep Atlantic ocean. Alongside his ten-times-great-grandfather Grand Old America, the patriotic uncle Sam, and a chaotic ensemble of real imaginary friends—including the hyperactive Bumble Bee, the speed-hopping Jack Rabbit, and the shape-shifting Orbette—Jordan must race against the midnight deadline to smash the American Silence.

Can a sixteenth birthday save the very concept of celebration? Or will the world stay permanently grey, quiet, and as boringly manicured as a British estate?
