In The Little Crayon, White Crayon struggles to be the odd crayon out: he is the only crayon that is never used to draw with because of his colour. All of the other crayons, including Red and Blue, bully him for his crayon colour, until one day White proves that he is just as much of a crayon as the others.
The Little Crayon is a story geared towards young children to help them understand that judging others based on the colour of their skin is wrong, and that no one should ever be bullied because of it.
Marissa Simoes is a Secondary Five student at Howard S Billings High School in the International Baccalaureate Programme. She is an author and illustrator of several children's books which all address the issue of bullying. Targeted at young children, she hopes that the books will help children understand that their words, as well as their actions, can have both negative and positive consequences on others. Dealing with racism, sexism, and classism, these books strive to help young children understand these often complex problems that everyone is familiar with.
