Toni Morrison(born Chloe Anthony Wofford) was born in Lorain Ohio on February 18, 1931. She is the second of four children, her family was a black working class family. She began getting interested in reading at an early age. Her favorite authors were Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy. In 1949 Toni attended Howard University and she received a B.A. in English. She earned a Mater of Arts degree in English at Cornell University. After she graduated she became an English teacher at Texas Southern University. At Howard university she met her future husband. They later divorced and she began editing. She then wrote The Bluest Eyes, Sula and Beloved. Beloved was a sucecess and this is one of her best stories. Toni Morrison writes mostly fiction. Through out her life she won many awards such as Nobel Prize Award in Literature, Presidental Medal of Freedom, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
