The Basic Rules Set 1 contains both a 64 page Player's Book and a 48 page Dungeon Master's Rulebook. Pages 29-36 of the Player's Book are often detached as they contain guidelines for Creating a New Character (pgs. 29-30); a sample Character Record Sheet (pgs. 31-32); a blank sheet of graph paper (pg. 33) and sample characters (pgs. 34-36).
The first printing of this set has BASIC RULES SET 1 on the front of the box, while later prints have SET 1: BASIC RULES which is the new format TSR adapted.
The Red Box is essentially the 3rd Edition Basic Set - following the 1st Edition Holmes Set and the 2nd Edition "Otus" Set.
