Despite a vast arsenal of antimicrobial therapy, infectious diseases
remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Appropriate
selection and optimum use of antimicrobial therapy can positively
influence patient outcomes, and reduce the emergence of antibiotic
resistant microorganisms. Despite the ubiquitous nature of infectious
diseases in the hospital setting, misadventures in antimicrobial therapy
are common. Appropriate antimicrobial use is essential to prevent the
development of antibiotic resistance and preserve effective
antimicrobial options for the future.
