Violet was born to Thomas and Anna Tangen, Norwegian immigrants to Northern Minnesota, in 1923. She spent her childhood on a small subsistence farm near Barnum, MN. Until after she left home as a young woman, the family had neither electricity nor indoor plumbing.
Mom completed training at Anchor Hospital in the Twin Cities, graduating as a registered nurse. It was there that she met and later married Kenneth Twist, who was in the cities training for WWII as an aerial gunner. Mom joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant -- she never served overseas.
Mom had three children; Thomas, born in 1946, LaVon, born in 1948, and Sherry, born in 1950, Mom spent the next 20+ years as an air force wife, loving mother, and hard working RN. She and Ken divorced in 1968.
She met and later married Sidney Wohl, a clinical psychologist at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital, where Mom worked as a psychiatric nurse. Mom and Sid raised Sid's young son Jon.
