we dreamt of flying - and other poems

This book is my response to those who’ve told me “you need to publish. “ Publishers, as good businessmen, publish what sells. I have no illusions about what I do. However the internet now provides a multiplicity of ways to self-publish without financial risk.

I sign my stuff as ”karen” in order to avoid calling attention to myself since most of my poems were first printed in the church newsletter. When I started to write in 2003 as an outlet for extreme duress, my style was free verse and verbose. As I continued, I tried to produce what “I heard” in my mind: just key words really. My conceptualization of my work is a glass ball that can be held in one’s hand and turned to and fro for examination: clear, smooth, and perfect. I don’t often achieve that. Most of the poems in this book are far more wordy. That is because they are about things I knew as a child and have the sing songy rhyming quality of the poetry I loved as a little girl.
