About the Book

When They Came is a gentle picture book about a young boy named Julio whose life changes suddenly when unfamiliar officers take him from his classroom. Confused and frightened, Julio is brought to a waiting place where he reunites with his mother, father, and baby sister. Together, they face uncertainty, meet other children in similar situations, and hold on to small moments of comfort and hope. Through love, family, and bravery, Julio learns that even when endings take time, he is not alone.
