The reason I chose to write this journal for kids is I wanted to give parents of home school children and really all parents a tool to effectively communicate basic fundamental doctrines to their children. As a home school teacher, Sunday school teacher and Bible student I have come to recognize a great need for going beyond the weekly Bible stories to teach children doctrinal truths. As I view the world through the eyes of this post-modern culture I see a great need to think missional as Frost & Hirsch write, “The missional church always thinks of the long haul rather than the quick fix” (p. 11). “Post-moderns see life as a smorgasbord. They tend to pick and choose various (strange to our eyes) combinations of things. Logic and reason are not a factor - it doesn't matter if the teachings contradict each other. They will take symbols, values, and rituals from various religious traditions and combine them into their own personal spirituality. To them, their conclusions are every bit as valid as anyone else's beliefs” (Corcoran). By teaching our children basic doctrinal truths over and over again we give them a firm foundation for their personal relationship with Jesus. Therefore when they go off to college they will be spiritually equiped with not only a personal relationship but also with spiritual truths.
