Second graders from Bob Hope Elementary School in Okinawa, Japan worked on a project to learned about economics and health. Students were tasked to think of a healthy recipe that included three of the five main food groups and had a $20 budget to buy all their ingredients. Students first learned about wants and needs. They also learned about the five main food groups, having a good balance of each group, and how each food group is important to our health. Shortly after, students interviewed a local chef, Tony Novak, to learn about the ins and outs of creating a recipe and buying ingredients. Students brought their recipes from home, categorized their ingredients into the five food groups and researched ingredient prices to incorporate their knowledge of wants and needs to meet their $20 budget. Finally, their recipes were compiled into this cookbook.
