PERLAS NIN SIRANGAN: Narratives of Bicolano Learners on Patriotism

For more than a decade now, I worked as a teacher, and during the first day of my meeting with my class, I always request my students to write the lyrics of the Philippine National Anthem with a time frame of seven (7) minutes. It is truly an alarming situation for me as a music teacher that as years passed by, students’ patriotism is diminishing.

There are a lot of issues regarding the singing of the Philippine National Anthem even in international events. Singers and performers seldom make a mistake by changing the lyrics and rendition of the song. Filipinos should recover and revitalize the lost and faded values of “love for the country”. It is the responsibility of every Filipino citizen to cultivate and continuously reinforce a strong sense of citizenship and nationhood by appreciating and understanding our national symbols.
