Reading is complex and requires the coordination of many different brain systems. Not every child can adapt to the classroom setting in which we learn to read. This manual is designed as an aid to teaching children with learning disabilities. Reading requires the intense exercise of several groups of brain and sensory "muscles." This manual describes a program which aids the learning process throughvauditory, visual, and brain exercises that improve processing speed, reasoning, and memory. Reading Fitness focuses almost exclusively on accuracy and fluency in reading, spelling, and pronunciation. This manual does not address grammar and comprehension issues

Emily (Wilder) Van Dalen grew up in Pakistan, married a New Zealander, and lives in the United States. She delights in world cultures and helping others to adapt in difficult circumstances. Her teaching philosophy is that a reading program should be a balance of fun and "exercise." It should require both hard work and discipline, but also a lot of laughter, enthusiasm, and a great sense of achievement at each step forward.
