School nurses use the term of endearment, "Frequent Fliers" to describe children who make numerous visits to the school clinic, but are not really sick. While their trips may signal a need, their frequent physical complaints make it difficult for school staff to discern when they are truly ill. In this tale, Charlie cries wolf when he repeatedly barks to go outside, but not to do his "business". He just wants to visit the neighbor dog.

Sherry Patterson is a School Nurse for Dover City Schools in Dover, Ohio. She wrote the Charlie's Tale series for use as a classroom or one on one tool to teach young students about issues that are sometimes difficult to address with them on a personal level. Her children Amanda and David and their dog, Charlie are the series' main characters. She uses them in a light-hearted way as bibliotherapy to demonstrate some of the common situations she deals with in her daily practice. There are discussion questions included at the end of each book to facilitate conversation with students about the topic.
