About the Book

Even though to Aaliyah her journey had started at that critical moment, it had actually started earlier that day. Aaliyah and her family had been travelling to the north, to stay with Aunt Harriet, and to escape the tyranny of slavery. Before they had started travelling they had worked for Mr. Parkinson, or as the rest of the slaves called him, Grunge. Grunge had been most terrible to Aaliyah and her family, beating her papa and cussing and shouting at her mama. Yet when her papa had come next to her bed, which she shared with her mama and sisters, squatted down and told her the plan it had all ended. They had taken off, in the darkness of the night, and left everything behind only taking each other. It had been an adrenaline rush, a fleeting moment of happiness but it didn’t last long
