If ever there were a composer whose soul strained toward the eternal, it was Beethoven. Among his masterpieces, the Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 stands as an ideal canvas to imagine a biblical-theological reading. That iconic “da-da-da-DUM” motif, almost universally recognized, could very well be the sonic mirror of humanity’s fall and the relentless knock of divine providence … fate, yes, but more so grace.
