If ever there were a composer whose soul strained toward the eternal, it was Beethoven. Though complicated in faith, his work pulses with longing, struggle, triumph, and transcendent beauty which are all hallmark movements in the gospel story. Among his masterpieces, the Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 stands as an ideal canvas to imagine a biblical-theological reading. That iconic “da-da-da-DUM” motif, almost universally recognized, could very well be the sonic mirror of humanity’s fall and the relentless knock of divine providence … fate, yes, but more so grace.
