Author Shelby Strogen claimed that the storyline for the book is base on the Nancy Drew game "The Captive Curse". "Playing the game made me feel like I was in a Frankenstein movie" she commented "It made me feel absolutely terrified with its eerie sounds and nighttime forest setting along with the village, I even screamed when the monster jumped out at me".
