About the Book
This version of the Enchiridion was developed expressly for use in the Introduction to Philosophy classes I teach at Blue River Community College, and at other campuses of the Metropolitan Community Colleges of Kansas City, Missouri. In those classes, Epictetus is the first philosopher the students meet, and the one we become acquainted with most intimately. His work represents a tradition and mission that have become eclipsed in contemporary Western philosophy: helping a person lead a meaningful life through self-understanding. It is that aspect of Epictetus that begins all my introductory classes, and it is done with this text.
