The circus comes to town in Tennesee. But the main problem is a performer in a cage is a abused by Romano and displayed like an animal. The kids in Tennesee sneak in the tent to see Romano's performer, and the performer [who happens to be a 7 year old girl] escapes from her cage and people are on a search party. Felix who went into the tent with his friends sees the girl in the garage and realizes she's not a monster, just mute and abused. Felix quickly becomes friends with the girl and the girl writes her name Sophie. But Felix has to explain to his parents that Sophie is not a monster, just a child who can't speak, but can hear and just acts crazy being locked in a cage. Sophie stays with Nick an African-American man with a housekeeper, they pamper her and give her good meals. Sophie has a tremoundous meltdown in the middle of the night, and Nick calls his best doctor and Mrs. Frazier and Felix finds Sophie with Dr. Graham. Dr. Graham explains to them her meltdowns are diagnosed with epilepsy. She was diagnosed at two years of age and her parents had to give her up in a mental hospital. Then Romano took her in. Mrs. Frazier tells Nick if Sophie gets any better, they'll teach her sign language and other people would understand her. Sophie learns pretty quick. Sophie is introduced at the church during service. Many people know about her story. Trouble comes when Romano returns for Sophie, and the J.A. later tells the judge about Romano of what he did to Sophie a long time, after Romano scared her off. The judge decides to forbid Romano's guardianship for Sophie but put her in a hospital for scans and test and surgery. Nick decides to leave but Sophie refuses. Sophie says a few words before she goes, but when the judge sees she's doing fine; he changes his mind.
