Mysterious objects keep appearing among four new friends just beginning college together. When the four are together, a fifth cup of cocoa, a fifth chair, a fifth water bottle, or any other fifth object will appear out of nowhere. Is someone trying to join them? Who is trying to contact them, and why?

Max, Connor, Luca, and Daniel attended school together in Brooklyn. While working on New York state history in their fourth grade social studies class, they convened a literary salon and came up with the story line of The Fifth Nation.
