About Me |
I am an Afro-Latina woman who has faced much prejudice from both African Americans and Hispanics. I grew up not being accepted by either group. I was considered “too black” for the Hispanics and “too Hispanic” for the blacks. There was also a great deal of colorism in my family. I was advised to marry outside of my race “para mejorar la raza.” In the hopes that my children would have “good hair” and less prominent African features. It took half of my lifetime to find acceptance and love for myself and stand proud as an Afro-Latina woman. I have since passed this love down to my beautiful daughter and am determined to continue this mission of self love by helping my adorable grandson Jeremiah from an early age to find pride and confidence in his Afro-Latino culture. I am making it my business to inform him that Africa too is his motherland and that his ethnicity as a Latino doesn’t make him any “less black.”
