Far off the coast of California lies a rough rock known as San Nicolas Island. Blue dolphins slash in the water surrounded it, sea fur play in the brown algae roll in the hay, and sea bird perch in its cliff. Once, Indians also lived on the island -- until one day they decided to leave and sweep to the east. A young girl was left behind. Karana was a young girl. Year after year, she hold off for the ship to come bask. But it never does. Finally, she recognize she must make a fatal pick: follow her people on her own or remain alone on the island for the rest of her life.
